11 countries punish homosexuals to death
The Brunei government has passed a new law imposing a severe punishment on those convicted of homosexuality and adultery. Under the law, which came into force on April 3, people convicted in such cases were sentenced to death in the presence of a group of Muslims.
The small Asian kingdom, with 67 percent of its citizens, became Islam, the first country in the region to adopt Sharia in 2014.
Amnesty International expressed shock and dismay over the new law and called on the country's authorities to back down from its plan and revise the penal code based on its human rights responsibilities and urged the international community to condemn the measure.
The United Nations has also criticized the legislation of Brunei, which provides for stoning to death for those convicted of homosexuality and adultery, and considers it a violation of human rights.
"The Secretary-General believes that human rights must be guaranteed to everyone everywhere without any discrimination," said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
This was followed by the cancellation of Virgin Australia Air's agreement with Brunei Airlines, against the background of Oman's reinstatement of stoning to death as a punishment for homosexuality and adultery.
The Australian company sent e-mails to its employees, explaining that the new law, adopted by Brunei, inspired by Islamic law, which came into effect on Wednesday, applies to Muslims and non-Muslims and foreigners, "and even those crossing on aircraft registered in Brunei."
American film star George Clooney and British singer Elton John also called for a boycott of nine luxury hotels owned by Sultan of Brunei, helping to shed more light on the issue globally.
